Regarding the May 17 Arts & Style review of the Hirshhorn exhibit “Shirin Neshat: Facing History” [“ The shah of Iran tried to control the uprising of various Marxist groups, some supported by the Soviets (who would soon invade Iran’s next-door neighbor Afghanistan), and the oppressive fundamentalist mullahs. Under the shah, Iran had more political, social and cultural life than any of its neighbors.
