Scientist jailed in Calif. cleared for freedom
NEW YORK – A scientist whose conviction for violating the Iran trade embargo was tossed out is set to be freed even though prosecutors want to appeal. Federal Judge John Keenan in New York said Wednesday he was prepared to sign an order freeing Mahmoud Reza Banki. He'd be allowed out of prison pending a retrial. Thirty-five-year-old Banki has been held at a prison outside Los Angeles. His lawyer said he could be freed Wednesday.
