Luristan Newt receives full CITES protection
An endangered Iranian species will receive full protection from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES). The 175-nation convention passed Iran's proposal to extend its highest protection to the critically endangered Luristan Newt, Neurergus kaiseri. The species is now listed as a CITES Appendix I, which outlaws all international trade in the species, and negates any captive breeding efforts outside officially sanctioned institutions such as zoos and aquariums.
