Top Irish cleric accused of abuse cover-up
The leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland has rejected calls to resign after being accused of covering up allegations of child abuse in the 1970s. Reports say Cardinal Sean Brady failed to inform authorities after admitting that he was present at meetings where two allegedly abused teenagers were made to sign vows of silence. The church held the meetings to investigate complaints against Father Brendan Smyth who was jailed in the 1990s for serial child abuse.
